Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz

Heart of Jazz Clef FINALPlans for Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz 2021 event are being determined, but enjoy a brief history of this wonderful event:

Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz is celebrating over 34 years of great jazz performed by world-class musicians and enjoyed by enthusiastic audiences from all over the country! Since its beginning, the annual fundraiser has raised over $355,000 for the Arts Council of Moore County. This jazz event was made possible by generous sponsors, such as Pinehurst Resort, Duke Energy, American Airlines, King Fisher Society, and Wells Fargo.

Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz was the brainchild of Mal & Marge Owings when it burst onto the local music scene in 1986 as a fundraiser for the newly renovated Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines, which was owned by the Arts Council. The performers for the first six years of this event were Loonis McGlohon Trio with vocalist Maxine Sullivan (1986), Loonis McGlohon Trio with vocalist Marlene Van Planck (1987), Salty Dogs (1988), Buck Creek Jazz Band (1989 & 1990), and Buck Creek Jazz Band with pianist Ed Metz (1991).

In 1989, Jan & Ed Schnell were asked to chair the event, and from then on the rest is history. Because of their hard work, dedication, and passion for jazz, Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz remains one of the most special nights in the Sandhills.

In 1992, Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz outgrew the Sunrise Theater and moved to Pinehurst Resort’s elegant Carolina hotel. This move proved to be a match made in jazz heaven as seen in the caliber of the performers to follow:
