The Arts Council of Moore County is dedicated to inspiring & strengthening our community through the arts. Join us on a project that will combine ART and PLACE in a very special way.
THE CAMPAIGN – Arts Council Gallery Addition to Campbell House
The Arts Council is raising $3.5 million for a major gallery addition to the Campbell House to help us further inspire & strengthen our community through the arts. This amount includes $1.5 million for construction, $1.75 million for an endowment, and $250,000 for a decorated ceiling. The project will add over 1,750 sq. ft. to the south side of the house, allowing the community to enjoy more on-site event such as large-scale & traveling art exhibits, lectures, special events, & more. The addition will elevate the Arts Council & its galleries as a major Sandhills destination, enhancing our capacity as a viable cultural center in our historic location at 482 East Connecticut Avenue in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

SUSTAINING THE FUTURE
HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY
The Arts Council of Moore County is growing and the Campbell House must grow with us if we are to meet the future needs of our community. For over 100 years, the Campbell House has been a beacon of culture, enhancing and influencing our civic life. The core of the house was once part of the original Boyd mansion, located 100 feet in front of present-day Weymouth Center. In the early 1920s, a section of the house was moved across the street to become the home of Jackson Boyd at 482 East Connecticut Avenue. In 1946, Mr. & Mrs. W.D. Campbell purchased the property and lived here for almost 20 years. The Campbell Family gave the property to the town in 1965, requesting it “be used exclusively for public purposes” and “in the interest of the citizens of the Town of Southern Pines and surrounding communities.” True to their wishes, Campbell House has been used continuously as a public resource by the Arts Council, Southern Pines Parks & Recreation Dept., Boy Scouts, Southern Pines Garden Club, and many other groups throughout the years.

GALLERY ADDITION DETAILS
The Arts Council has engaged Liberatos Architects, a traditional architecture firm that specializes in designing additions to historic buildings. This project’s main feature is a large art gallery with space to display larger works of art, room to gather more people, and a separate meeting room. The plan also includes a small art gallery, two ADA public restrooms, and two elevators for access to the 2nd floor spaces & basement for storage.
The project has been endorsed by the Town of Southern Pines and supported by the Campbell Family and a growing list of generous patrons. We hope to break ground in 2027.

CAMPBELL HOUSE LANDSCAPE PLAN
The Arts Council is working with award-winning landscape engineer, Glenn Bradley, who has begun the preservation, rehabilitation and restoration of the grounds around the house. Based on the original 1948 design by Innocenti & Webel, (graphic to the left) our plan is for the outside of Campbell House to reflect the period when the Campbell Family occupied the home from 1948-1966.

LARGE GALLERY DECORATED CEILING
The large gallery will also feature an artisan-made decorative plaster ceiling, ornamented with paintings created by noted classical painters who lived and trained in Southern Pines. Similar in nature to the church frescoes in western North Carolina, this public art project will attract visitors along East Connecticut Avenue, a North Carolina Scenic Byway anchored by the Arts Council, Fort Bragg, Southern Pines Horse Country, Weymouth Center, and Weymouth Woods Nature Preserve.
