Katie Mielens is originally from Bay City, Michigan and has had a passion for art making since she could pick up a pencil. Katie graduated from Central Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in studio art, art history, and museum studies. She is a process-oriented mixed media artist who layers and collages papers, paint, photos, and ink to foster new relationships between these materials, as well as document the constant reinterpretation of self-identity and complex emotions.

Katie has experience as a Museum Educator and Teaching Artist through her work at the Cranbrook Art Museum, Lansing Art Gallery, Tacoma Art Museum, as well as at other non-profits and schools. She also has served as an AmeriCorps member through City Year Milwaukee as a tutor and after school coordinator. Katie is looking forward to inspiring young people to use art as creative expression, empowerment, and community building through ArtistYear as an AmeriCorps Fellow in Moore County, NC!
