Appetite for Art

The Arts Council of Moore County requests the pleasure of your company. We are excited to offer the 2014 edition of Appetite for Art, thanks to the overwhelming response and success of last year’s events. Appetite for Art is a series of exciting parties hosted by generous friends of the Arts Council. Dinners, luncheons, and other themed events are offered throughout the year. Cost per party is noted. All proceeds from Appetite for Art will benefit the programs and services of the Arts Council of Moore County.

PARTY RESERVATIONS: Reservations for each party will be accepted with a completed reservation form on a “first-come, first-served” basis. To receive your reservation form via mail, just call the Arts Council at 910-692-ARTS (2787) or pick a brochure up at the Campbell House (482 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines). Make your selections early before the parties fill up. [NOTE: Party dates and times are subject to change.]

Party # 1:  A Jazzy Dinner

Dinner:  5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the home of Jean Peters
Concert:  8:00 p.m. at Pinehurst Resort

Hosted by Jean Peters and Doug Hardisty

Enjoy a jazzy dinner prior to an incredible concert at the Arts Council’s annual Heart ‘n Soul of Jazz fundraiser featuring award-winning cabaret singer, Colleen McHugh and her equally talented band. Immediately after the concert, talk to Colleen and the band at the delicious Meet-the-Artists Dessert Reception in the Grand Ballroom.

Colleen McHugh is a singer, writer, actor, and comic. Since leaving her post at Second City’s National Touring Company and moving to New York in 2003, she has appeared on television’s The Colbert Report, and in several comedy sketches on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. She has also made her Carnegie Hall debut as a special guest artist in Michael Feinstein’s Now and Then concert series, and made her debut at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Want to make a statement? Create a mood? Communicate joy? Grab attention? You can do all this through the world of COLOR! Even before the days of Sir Isaac Newton’s original color circle and Leondardo da Vinci’s notebooks including color theory, humans have expressed themselves through the 2.8 million different hues the eye perceives.

Come have fun at Village Design Group (VDG) in Southern Pines, and explore the visual effects of specific color combinations. Led by VDG interior designer Millicent Moats and using VDG’s large showroom library, you will have the opportunity to put together fabrics, carpet and paint samples and accessories that tell the story of style that appeals to you and your lifestyle. You might even discover that your taste reveals COLOR WITH A TWIST!

Refreshments will be provided.

Party #5:  Run for the Roses: A Kentucky Derby Party

We’re off to the Races at Louisville, KY!  Put on your fancy hat and smashing duds and join us at the Campbell House where you’ll be part of the Churchill Downs crowd. By way of the large screen TV, you’ll be watching the races at the Derby at a starting time of 6:24 p.m.

The party begins at 5:00 p.m. and there will be time to start off with Mint Juleps, wine and all kinds of Southern fare, while you watch the Run for the Roses.  Research your favorite horse to make bets at our teller windows for great prizes! Betting donations will benefit the Arts Council.

Party #6:  Follow the Leader Oil Painting Class

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at painting? Well, this is the class for you!  Led by artist Joan Williams, this class is for beginners or advanced. All materials provided. Plan to have a lot of fun and go home with a completed oil painting (similar to the one below)…painted by YOU!  Bring a brown bag lunch—Dessert and beverage provided.

Party #7:  Young People’s Art Exhibit & Tea Party

Here’s a chance for your child to display his or her artwork in the beautiful setting of the Campbell House Gardens for family, friends, and neighbors to see.

Once registered, you will receive an invitation that will include an 11” x 20” canvas on which for your child to create a work of art. On May 10th, bring your child’s artwork to be displayed in the gardens behind the Campbell House in a special art exhibit. We will then host a tea party in honor of Mother’s Day.

Party #9: Tennis ‘n Tartes IX

At the Pinehurst Country Club Tennis Center in Pinehurst

Check in and coffee begins at the Tennis Center followed by Round Robin Tennis on the courts of Pinehurst.

Following, all participants will proceed to the new Veranda of the Pinehurst Country Club, which overlooks the U.S. Open famed 18th hole of course No. 2. Here you will enjoy a delectable buffet luncheon with tartes, of course!! A cash bar will be available.

A program with prizes will follow the luncheon, completing a perfect morning and afternoon in Pinehurst.
