Classical Concert Series

Welcome to the Classical Concert Series’ 30th season!  The Arts Council of Moore County is excited to celebrate a huge milestone–three decades of bringing the world’s best classical musicians to Moore County!  Since 1981, the Classical Concert Series (CCS) has grown into one of the most respected and successful chamber music series in North Carolina.  Past artists have included the Tokyo String Quartet, pianist Olga Kern, the Eroica Trio, violinist Chee-Yun, Vienna Boys Choir, and flutist Ransom Wilson, just to name a few. The 2011-12 season continues CCS’ quality with four incredible concerts not to be missed…

The Empire Brass returns to the CCS stage and brings their international reputation as North America’s finest brass quintet. The five musicians—all of whom have held leading positions with major American orchestras—perform well over 100 concerts a year. As the first brass ensemble to win the prestigious Naumberg Chamber Music Award, they are equally at home with the antiphonal works of Gabrieli to the show-stopping tunes of Richard Rodgers and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Joining The Empire Brass for this special concert at the Village Chapel in Pinehurst will be internationally recognized organist, Douglas Major. Dr. Major has toured throughout the world. From 1974 to 2002, he was organist and choirmaster for the Washington (DC) National Cathedral. He now lives in Massachusetts, working as a composer and serving as Director of Music for St. Michael’s Church in Marblehead.

CAROLINE GOULDING, VIOLIN
Monday, October 24, 2011 – 8 PM
Sunrise Theater, Southern Pines

Though still in her teens, violinist Caroline Goulding has already achieved musical dreams that most artists take a lifetime to accomplish. She has appeared as soloist with many of America’s best orchestras, debuted at Carnegie Hall, been featured on NBC, NPR, and PBS, won first prize in the 2009-10 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and her debut recording received a Grammy nomination for Best Solo Instrumentalist (without orchestra). Caroline began studying the violin at the age of three-and-a-half under the tutelage of Julia Kurtyka and continued her studies with Paul Kantor. She currently attends the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studies with Joel Smirnoff.

ALEXANDER KOBRIN, PIANO
Monday, February 27, 2012 – 8 PM

Since receiving the prestigious Gold Medal at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2005, Alexander Kobrin solidified his reputation as a rising star to remember. Born in Moscow, Kobrin began piano studies at the age of five with Tatiana Zelikman at the Gnessin Special Music School, where he now serves as a member of the faculty. A 2003 graduate of the Moscow Conservatoire, he studied under the late Professor L. Naumov. In addition to touring all over the world, Kobrin is a faculty member on the International Keyboard Festival in Mannes School of Music in NYC and is the Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA.

MODIGLIANI STRING QUARTET
Monday, March 26, 2012 – 8 PM
Sunrise Theater, Southern Pines

 

The Modigliani Quartet was formed in 2003 and first attracted international attention in 2004 by winning the Frits Philips String Quartet competition in Eindhoven. With its members, Phillipe Bernhard and Loïc Rio on violins, Laurent Marfaing on viola, and François Kieffer on cello, the quartet took First Prize at the Vittorio Rimbotti competition in Florence in 2005 and won the highly prestigious Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York in 2006 allowing them to regularly tour in the U.S. It has since become one of the world’s most sought after chamber ensembles. The group has performed in such prestigious venues as Vienna’s Musikverein, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center, and Tokyo’s Kioi Hall.
