Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship

The Arts Council of Moore County’s Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship was established in 2000 with the goal to provide support to Moore County middle and high school students with a demonstrated talent and interest in the arts. The scholarship may be used for such items as fees for a music or art camp, studying dance at a local dance company, or taking private lessons with an art or music teacher. The scholarship may not be used to fund college attendance.

The scholarship is named for Harry Barnes and Vaud Ancil Travis, III, two long-time and strong supporters of the Arts Council of Moore County and the arts throughout Moore County.  Additional funds have been created in someone’s honor or memory. These funds include:

  • Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship – This scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to pursue their interest in any arts genre.
  • Carol Lawson Rouhier Visual Arts Scholarship – Awarded in memory of Moore County artist and longtime Arts Council member, Carol Lawson Rouhier, this scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to pursue their interest in the visual arts.
  • Sara Schrock Theatre Scholarship – Awarded in memory of actor, Sara Schrock, this scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to pursue their interest in theatre.
  • Laine Lea Classical Ballet Scholarship – Awarded in honor of Laine Lea, this scholarship is awarded to applicants who reside in Moore County and wish to study classical ballet.

Since the Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship’s inception, the Arts Council has awarded 113 scholarships in the amount of $38,455 to middle and high school students pursuing their interest in the arts.


Congratulations to the scholarship winners for 2017:

BARNES-TRAVIS ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS:

  • Grace Gualteros of Pinehurst received a scholarship to attend the UNCG Summer Music Camp to play piano. She is in the 12th grade at the School of the Sacred Heart.
  • Michelle Oldham of Lakeview received a scholarship to take private flute lessons. She is in the 11th grade at Union Pines High School.
  • Holly Riedesel of Carthage received a scholarship to attend the UNCG Summer Music Camp to play flute. She is in the 11th grade at Pinecrest High School.
  • Riley Wicker of West End received a scholarship to take private piano lessons. He is in the 7th grade at Eastern Sky Academy.
  • Matthew Wise of West End received a scholarship to attend Appalachian State University’s Cannon Music Camp to play euphonium. He is in the 11th grade at Pinecrest High School.

CAROL LAWSON ROUHIER VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIP:

  • Annalise Norton of Southern Pines received a scholarship to take private art lessons. She is in the 8th grade at Southern Middle School.

SARA SCHROCK THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP:

  • Elizabeth Cox of West End received a scholarship to attend the Temple Theater Teen Conservatory. She is in the 12th grade at Pinecrest High School.

LAINE LEA CLASSICAL BALLET SCHOLARSHIPS:

  • Christa Blades of Whispering Pines received a scholarship to attend the South Carolina Summer Dance Conservatory. She is in the 11th grade at Union Pines High School.
  • Anna Ettrich of Pinehurst received a scholarship to attend the Burklyn Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive. She is in the 9th grade at Pinecrest High School.
  • Sabrina Shaw of Pinebluff received a scholarship to take lessons at Carolina Performing Arts Center. She is in the 7th grade at Southern Middle School.
  • Augusta Smith of Pinehurst received a scholarship to attend the Burklyn Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive. She is in the 10th grade at the O’Neal School.

The Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship Fund is a wonderful and convenient way to support the Arts Council of Moore County and the Moore County children interested in the arts.
