The Arts Council of Moore County, in partnership with the English Speaking Union-Sandhills Branch, Moore County Schools, Penick Village, Ruth Pauley Lecture Series, Sandhills Community College, and Sunrise Theater, present “Reflections of Africa” from January 28-February 22, 2019.

This multi-venue series of programs explores the unique diversity of African culture and wildlife through lectures, films and art exhibits. South African artist Garth Swift, Kenyan naturalist Joseph Koyie, Sandhills artist Jessie Mackay, and Canadian artist Patricia Thomas will conduct a series of innovative presentations and art exhibits that explore the relationships between the African people, cultures of Africa and its wildlife.

Visit Campbell House Galleries in March to view the art exhibit, Young People’s Fine Arts Festival. This annual art competition showcases artwork by students in grades K-8 from Moore County’s public, private, charter, and home schools. The students’ art is judged and their awards are given out at a special reception and awards ceremony.

Awards Ceremony & Opening Reception:  Friday, March 1, 2019 – 5 to 7 p.m.

The Arts Council of Moore County’s Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship was established in 2000 with the goal to provide support to Moore County middle and high school students with a demonstrated talent and interest in the arts. The scholarship may be used for such items as fees for a music or art camp, studying dance at a local dance company, or taking private lessons with an art or music teacher. [NOTE: These scholarships may NOT be used to fund college attendance.]

The scholarship program is named for Harry Barnes and Vaud Ancil Travis, III, two long-time and strong supporters of the Arts Council of Moore County and the arts throughout Moore County. Additional funds have been created in someone’s honor or memory. These funds include:

  • Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship – This scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to pursue their interest in any arts genre.
  • Carol Lawson Rouhier Visual Arts Scholarship – Awarded in memory of Moore County artist and longtime Arts Council member, Carol Lawson Rouhier, this scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to pursue their interest in the visual arts.
  • Sara Schrock Theatre Scholarship – Awarded in memory of actor, Sara Schrock, this scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to pursue their interest in theatre.
  • Laine Lea Classical Ballet Scholarship – Awarded in honor of Laine Lea, this scholarship is awarded to applicants who reside in Moore County and wish to study classical ballet.

Since the Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship’s inception, the Arts Council has awarded 129 scholarships in the amount of $46,105 to middle and high school students pursuing their interest in the arts.
